We had a full house on Friday, European Researcher’s Night, for the launch of our brewing documentary. We are looking forward to sharing the film freely in the coming weeks. Announcing the launch and screening of a documentary on brewing beer from the sixteenth century. The film is directed by Prof Shreepali Patel, a Bafta winning film maker based at University of the Arts in London. It was produced in collaboration with Storylab at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. It follows the team of FoodCult researchers from the archive, through fields, the brewhouse, and finally the laboratory in our journey to recreate and understand early modern beer.
The Screening will take place at the Long Room Hub on Friday 29th September at 1830. It will be followed by discussion with the project PI, Dr Susan Flavin, the film’s director BAFTA winner Prof Shreepali Patel, renowned food and drinks historian, Marc Meltonville, and heritage brewer Maurice Deasy from Canvas Brewery, Co Tipperary.
The event forms part of Trinity’s European Researchers’ Night and the Trinity Arts and Humanities Research Festival.

On 28th June, the FoodCult Team presented a panel at the ‘Food Systems’ conference hosted by the Institute for Sustainable Food at the University of Sheffield. Through six integrated papers we showcased recent results from the project with a focus on a case study from Carrickmines Castle.
Susan and Marc were delighted to chat with Neil Buttery for the latest episode of The British Food History Podcast. The episode focused on the brewing project, and our experiences in undertaking ‘practice based’ history.
We were delighted to have an opportunity to share FoodCult research as part of a three-episode radio podcast on historic food poverty in Ireland. The show, produced by Berni Dwan and hosted by NearFM, broadcasts every Thursday at 2.30 pm, starting 25th May, 2023. FoodCult featured in the second episode which airs on June 1st.
Great to see the FoodCult beer research reported in Boak and Bailey’s popular beer news blog (23rd May). Even better, the authors described our Historical Journal article as ‘accessible and engaging’ for a non- academic audience.
On 24th May, Susan gave a keynote lecture at the Posthumus Conference, hosted at the University of Antwerp. The conference theme was ‘food inequalities’ and the lecture focused on the the value of interdisciplinary research and practice based approaches to understanding diets in the past.
On 17th April 2023 Susan presented a keynote lecture at a BrIAS Workshop on
‘Dietary Dilemmas: Influences on Consumer ‘Choice’ in Preindustrial Societies’. The workshop was organised by Prof. Dr. Beat Kümin & Prof. Dr. ir. Frits Heinrich as part of a collaboration between Department of History & Food GRP, University of Warwick and the Brussels Institute of Advanced Studies. The paper focused on food and religion in early modern modern Ireland and presented findings from across the workpackages, exploring the significance of religious ideas and practices on consumption and social interaction in early modern Ireland.
There has been a tremendous media response to the FoodCult brewing project in the past few weeks. The research has been covered by The Times newspaper, BBC Radio 4 and also by Jane Garvey and Fi Glover on their Times Radio show. There have also been multiple blog posts, including one by renowned beer writer Jeff Alworth, author of The Beer Bible.
We are delighted that the results of the brewing project have now been published in ‘first view’ by The Historical Journal.
